The Flint Hills are America's last tallgrass prairie, a green enclave set in the midst of the farmland of eastern Kansas. Known as the home of the Big Beef Steer, these rugged hills have produced exemplary cowboys—both the ranch and rodeo varieties—whose hard work has given them plenty of material for equally good stories. Jim Hoy grew up in the Flint Hills on a ranch at Cassoday that's been in his family for five generations and boasts roots "as deep as those of bluestem grass in black-soil bottomland." He now draws on this area's rich cowboy lore—as well as on his own experience working cattle, breaking horses, and rodeoing—to write a folk history of the Flint Hills spanning a century and a half. Hoy blends history, folklore, and memoir to conjure for readers the tallgrass prairies of his boyhood in a book that richly recalls the ranching life and the people who lived it. Here are cowboys and outlaws, rodeo stars and runaway horses, ordinary folks and the stuff of legends. Hoy introduces readers to the likes of Lou Hart, a top hand with the Crocker Brothers from 1906 to1910, whose poetic paean to ranch life circulated orally for fifty years before seeing print. And he tracks down the legend of Bud Gillette, considered by his neighbors the world's fastest man until he fell in with an unscrupulous promoter. He even unravels the mystery of a lone grave supposed to be that of the first cowboy in the Flint Hills. Hoy also explains why a good horse makes up for having to work with exasperating cattle—and why not all horses are created (or trained) equal. And he traces Flint Hills cattle culture from the days of the trail drive through the railroad years to today's trucking era, with most railroad stockyards torn down and only one section house left standing. Writes Hoy, "I feed on the stories of the Hills and the characters who tell them as the cattle feed on the grasses." His love of the land shines throughout a book so real that readers will swear they hear the click of horseshoes on flint rock with every turn of the page.

Broken and trying to piece his life back together, Cody’s unprepared for the feelings that erupt when his childhood bestie and the sweet ‘girl next door’, Carolina Grace is assigned to be his physical therapist. But Cody’s not the only one broken, and as the two struggle to rebuild their lives, will the solace they find in each other give them the courage to reach for love one more time? Heart of a Rancher – Lexi Grace can’t stand Jarrod O’Neill. In her opinion, the cocky, arrogant lawyer who always seems to best her in court, needs to be taken down a notch. But after too much Irish whiskey and dirty limericks the night of her sister’s wedding lead to a scorching encounter between the sheets, Jarrod has other plans. Including moving to Prairie. Even though their chemistry is explosive, they end up on opposite sides of a political race that could bring them everything they want, or drive them apart for good. An Epic ending to the Cowboys of the Flint Hills series that will leave you laughing and crying.

"This is a short essay collection that, much like the author, wears many hats: it combines Kansas history, memoir, environmental history and conservation, and regional folklore. Jim's family has ranched in the Flint Hills since the 1870s and continues to do so to this day, both at Jim's Flying H Ranch and his son Josh's ranch in Chase County, the Flying W. The manuscript shares family stories and anecdotes about working ranch life alongside ruminations on the serene beauty of the Flint Hills, discussions of the ways that cattle ranching has changed over time, the history of the nearby town of Cassoday, the prairie's natural resources and efforts to preserve them, and tales of local legends and colorful characters (some of whom are also the author's relatives). In short, this book is a love letter to the Flint Hills, written by the person who knows them best"--

Parker has always wondered what would have happened if he’d made a move sooner. But now that Cassidy’s back, a messed up combat veteran and the newest member of Prairie’s fire brigade, he’s thinking about it. A lot. But Cassidy is fighting more than just fires. Her nights are tortured with visions from her experience as a combat helicopter pilot in Afghanistan. Her days are haunted by Parker offering something she thinks she’s not worthy to have. Only love can quench this fire When Cassidy volunteers for a dangerous hotshot mission in the wilds of Colorado, Parker insists on going with her. As they travel together into a life-threatening situation, will their love combust like the trees that surround them? And in the battlefield of a forest fire, will Cassidy be brave enough to fight for the one thing that will snuff out the fires that rage within her?
